If you have been in our community for a while now then you know that with Free Spirited Wanderer yoga goes well beyond the Asana. It has always been a lifestyle for me, something that would provide radical change in my life and help me get to know myself on the deepest level possible in order to create a path that would provide me with true fulfillment - which comes from learning how to live our life from the inside out rather than living from the outside in, which is a result of societal norms and conditioning.
From teaching, practicing, and living yoga - I’ve come to understand that living this truly fulfilling life involves navigating three essential questions that guide us on our journey:
Who am I at the core of my being? This question invites deep introspection. It’s about peeling back the layers of our identity—beyond societal roles, expectations, and even our own self-doubt—to discover the essence of who we are. At our core lies a deep connection to our inner wisdom, truth, and personal power. It’s about recognizing our unique qualities, values, and beliefs, and understanding how they align with our authentic self. This self-awareness empowers us to live with intention and integrity, making choices that resonate with our true nature.
What is my purpose? This is the inquiry into our individual contribution to the world. It involves reflecting on our passions, skills, and the impact we desire to make. By discovering our purpose, we can filter our decisions through this lens, ensuring that our actions align with our greater vision. This question challenges us to consider how we show up each day—what we prioritize, how we interact with others, and how we pursue our goals. Living purposefully infuses our lives with meaning and direction, creating a sense of deep fulfillment that transcends mere achievement.
How badly do I want what I want? One of my teachers, Rod Stryker teaches that we have 4 levels of our desires and each level determines our intention, commitment, and resilience. This concept helps us to reflect on how far we are willing to go to achieve our dreams and aspirations - and discovering lasting fulfillment. It challenges us to confront our fears and limitations, and to know what we are prepared to endure and fight for in our pursuit of a fulfilling and meaningful life. Understanding our motivations (and purpose) can ignite a powerful drive within us, inspiring action and perseverance even in the face of adversity.
In my experience, the answers to these personally profound questions reveal themselves through a disciplined, dedicated, and devoted yoga practice. Yoga is not merely a physical practice; it is something we embody, and encompasses a holistic approach to self-discovery and transformation. A wholesome practice may include asana (the physical postures), meditation (a tool to calm and clear the mind), mantra (sacred sound), pranayama (breath control), and the study of philosophical concepts such as the yamas and niyamas (guidelines for ethical living and our relationships with ourselves and the world), the Kleshas (the root causes of suffering), and the Purushartas (the four goals of human life). Each of these elements offers invaluable insights and tools for navigating our inner blueprint and understanding our place in the universe.
Yet, the beauty of yoga lies in its diversity; there are countless paths that can lead us toward the same ultimate goal of self-realization and fulfillment. Part of our practice is about discovering which path or combination of paths resonates most with us and will support our unique journey. It’s an exploration of what practices nourish our spirit, cultivate awareness, and foster connection, both within ourselves and with the world around us.
