Why I Keep Returning to Anamaya for Our Costa Rica Yoga Retreats

I've led retreats all over the world, and every destination I've chosen has been special in its own way. From mountain lodges and beachfront resorts to historic villas and jungle sanctuaries, each retreat location has offered something unique to the experience and the people who joined it.

Anamaya, located in Montezuma, Costa Rica, is one of those places that continues to stand out.

As we prepare for our 3rd biennial Pura Vida Yoga Retreat, I thought I'd share a few of the reasons I continue to return to this incredible retreat center and why I continue bringing the Free Spirited Wanderer community here.

1. It's Located in a Blue Zone

Costa Rica is home to one of the world's five Blue Zones, regions where people tend to live longer, healthier lives. Researchers often attribute this longevity to a combination of movement, purpose, connection, time in nature, and a slower pace of life.

What I love most is that many of the same things people seek on retreat are already woven into everyday life here. There is a natural rhythm that encourages you to slow down, spend time outside, connect with others, and focus on what truly supports your wellbeing.

It's the perfect environment to step away from daily responsibilities and reconnect with yourself.

2. The Food Alone Is Worth the Trip

Anyone who has attended one of our Costa Rica retreats knows that the food quickly becomes one of the highlights of the week.

Meals are fresh, intentional, nourishing, and locally sourced whenever possible. Every meal leaves you feeling energized and cared for without feeling overly heavy.

It's the kind of food that supports the entire retreat experience and often contributes to why people return home feeling refreshed, clear-headed, and healthy.

3. We Have the Entire Property to Ourselves

One of the things that makes this retreat experience so unique is that we have exclusive access to the property. There are no outside guests and no sharing the space with strangers.

This creates an environment that feels intentional, immersive, and supportive of the experience we're creating together. Without many of the distractions that come with a traditional resort, it's easier to settle into the rhythm of the retreat and fully be present.

4. The Staff Feels Like Family

Many of the team members at Anamaya have been part of the property for more than a decade.

Their warmth, hospitality, and genuine care are part of what makes this place so memorable.

From the moment you arrive, you're greeted with kindness and sincerity that immediately makes you feel welcome. They don't simply provide a service. They create an atmosphere where people feel supported, cared for, and at home.

5. The Spa Is Next Level

The spa sits overlooking the jungle and Pacific Ocean, creating a setting that feels deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

Whether you choose a massage, facial, or body treatment, it's one more opportunity to slow down, receive, and care for yourself throughout the week.

Many guests choose to schedule treatments during their free time, and it often becomes one of their favorite experiences of the retreat.

6. The Yoga Shalas Are Sacred

I've taught in yoga studios, retreat centers, conference rooms, beaches, and outdoor pavilions around the world. The shalas at Anamaya remain some of my favorite spaces I've ever taught in.

Perched above the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by nature, they create an environment that naturally invites presence and reflection. There is something powerful about stepping onto your mat while overlooking the ocean, listening to the sounds of nature, and allowing yourself to fully arrive in the practice.

7. You Can Be as Adventurous or Relaxed as You Want

One of my favorite things about Costa Rica is that there is room for every type of traveler. Some people come excited to surf, zipline, explore waterfalls, and embrace adventure. Others come looking for rest, spaciousness, and time to simply be. Neither approach is better than the other.

The beauty of this retreat is that it allows you to create the experience you need most.

8. It's the Kind of Place That Stays With You

Long after the retreat ends, people often remember the feeling more than anything else.

The pace,

views,

practices,

conversations,

sunsets,

friendships,

and sense of presence that naturally develops throughout the week.

I know I always do.

It's one of the reasons I continue returning and sharing this place with others.

More Than a Beautiful Destination

After leading retreats around the world, I've learned that the location is about far more than beautiful views or great amenities.

It's about how a place makes people feel.

Anamaya has a way of helping people slow down, reconnect with themselves, build meaningful relationships, and remember what truly matters.

That's what keeps me coming back.
